Poppy Planters

One of my favorite memories as a child was the week when the poppies bloomed in our family garden. They had originally been planted by my grandparents 40 years before, and my dad loved taking me out every year to see the family flowers. In honor of this cherished memory, I decided to create some poppies that could live in my home year round! I enjoy how they look with plants nestled inside of them, but they will also work wonderfully as a catch all on top of my dresser.

Cover half of your balloon with paper mache. Don’t worry about making the edges clean yet, just get the paste about half-way up the balloon.

Wrap the entire balloon in plastic wrap and pinch the top edge. Tighten the plastic wrap to create lines and creases in the paper mache. This will create the uneven, natural texture in the edge and sides.

If you don’t want your poppies to be flat on the bottom, tie a string to the balloon and hang-dry them. Otherwise you can leave them to dry on a piece of parchment paper.

Once your paper mache is dry, snip the top of the balloon to deflate it.
