Lip Balm Gift Set

My favorite part of making my own cosmetics is playing with the scents. It’s so fun to try out the different flavors, and if you’re feeling adventurous you can mix them to make your own scent. I chose origami paper for the bright patterns, but of course you could choose any paper you like. This set is great for creating a number of little gifts quickly—I made these as party favors for a friend’s baby shower.

Project Yield

Measure out four teaspoons of beeswax, two teaspoons of shea butter, and three teaspoons of almond oil. For a glossier lip balm you can add an extra teaspoon or so of the almond oil. Add all ingredients to a glass mason jar. Melt the ingredients by placing the mason jar in a pot of simmering water. When melted, it will appear transparent and slightly yellowish in color.

Remove from the heat and add 1/4 teaspoon of flavoring oil. If you want to create tinted lip balm, shave a little bit of lipstick or mix in loose eye shadow powder. Close the jar and shake vigorously.

Carefully pour the hot liquid into the tubes and pots. Fill each container to the top. Allow the lip balm to harden without disturbing for at least 20 minutes.

To decorate the tubes, cut a piece of paper that is wide and long enough to wrap around the tube. I cut a 1.5 inch by 3.5 inch piece of origami paper.

For the lip balm pots, cut the origami paper using a one inch circle punch.

Brush Mod Podge on the back of the paper and press it onto the pot or tube. If you need to, dab on a little more Mod Podge to seal the ends.
