Felt Ball Trivet

I made this felt ball trivet to brighten up my kitchen for those gloomy afternoons I sit down with a hot bowl of soup. The bright colors of the wool roving really pop in my neutral kitchen. I enjoyed how meditative making the felt balls was, and sewing everything together at the end was a breeze. This project would make a great housewarming present, and I love that I can mix up to colors to customize the gift.

    Description
Mix some textile soap with hot water. Your hands will be in the water, so make sure it's not so hot that you burn yourself!

    Description
Tear off a 2 inch piece of roving. (Do not cut roving as this stops the fibers from felting properly.) Form the roving into a ball with your hands and dampen it with a small amount of soapy water.

    Description
Start to roll the roving around in your hands very gently. Apply a little bit of pressure, but don't squeeze it tightly. The outside of the ball will start to felt, and slowly the ball will get smaller and more compact. Add small amounts of soapy water to your hands as the ball starts to dry out, but do not drench the roving.

Continue making balls of the same size until you have used up all of your roving. Allow them to dry completely before sewing.

Cut a 3 yard piece of embroidery floss and tie a double knot at the end. Start to thread the felt balls onto it and push them together towards the end.

    Description
Once you have threaded at least five inches of the felt balls, you can start to spiral them together. Continue adding balls in a color arrangement you enjoy until you have used them all up.

    Description
Once you have threaded all of the balls, you can sew back through your trivet to secure the spiral shape. Sew back through your last ball so that the needle is going towards the center of the trivet. Continue threading across the trivet until you reach the other side. Sew across the trivet multiple times until the trivet is one solid piece.

    Description
Try to end with your thread on a felt ball the same color as your thread. Sew back through the ball and pull the thread until you have a small loop. Bring your thread through the loop to create a knot. Trim the thread a few millimeters from the knot.
