Dip-Dyed Eggs

I can’t believe I spent so many years buying Easter egg kits when this DIY dyeing technique is so easy! I love that it uses supplies I always have on hand, and the custom dipping tool makes it easy to create sophisticated multi-color eggs. Of course this is a very kid-friendly project—just stick with hard-boiled eggs so you don’t have to worry about breakage, and even a pre-schooler can participate all the way through. And it’s great how kids are always so proud to eat the eggs they decorated themselves!

Create a dye bath by mixing a few drops of food coloring with water in a shallow bowl. Dip the egg into the dye and hold it there for about 15 seconds. The longer you leave it in the dye, the deeper the color.

For a striped effect, flip the egg over and dip the other end into a different color. Continue to dip the egg into different colors to create different patterns. For designs where the colors overlap, let the egg dry in between dips. Try dipping at different angles, or create an ombre effect by diluting your dye.
